Christmas Facts pt.1

The Christmas tree was originally a German tradition.
Initially a pagan tradition it slowly became associated with Christmas. The first public Christmas tree in America was probably lit in 1851 (though the claim is disputed)in Ohio, inside a church; this was shunned by the parishes as a pagan tradition.
It was introduced to England in 1832 by the consort queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Princess Victoria (later queen on her own right) then a 13 year old, became very fond of the tradition.
It is commonly and widely associated with Christianity, though in recent years it has been adopted by many religions, and as a secular holiday ornament (I oughtta know :p). Controversy on this matter has spurred, with some local governments even renaming it as a Holiday tree, spurring public outcry. It is nowadays a common practice in some non-orthodox, or mixed-belief jewish households, to place a holiday tree under the "Hanukah Bush" name. (totally unrelated to the president, of course; and nothing to do with his recent gaffe of the inclusion of a Christmas tree on a White House Hanukah dinner invitation).

Usually, it is an evergreen coniferous tree; not a pine tree (which usually are several feet tall, and not exactly apt for living room decoration).
